It doesn’t always have to be your own car, car sharing offers a good and flexible alternative. In Stuttgart, there are two complementary car sharing options: station-based and station-independent. Both models help to improve the traffic situation in the state capital and make it more sustainable. In addition, a wide range of sharing options are available to citizens in the city districts: Bicycles, pedelecs and cargo bikes from RegioRad Stuttgart (opens in a new tab), electric scooters and e-scooters.
Car sharing concept of the city of Stuttgart
The City of Stuttgart supports the use of car sharing as a contribution to sustainable mobility. Car sharing is an important part of the “Sustainable and innovative mobility in Stuttgart” action plan and the climate mobility plan.
In January 2020, the municipal council unanimously approved the concept to promote station-based car sharing PDF-File 19,01 MB. The aim is to provide a comprehensive and easily accessible car sharing service in all districts of Stuttgart. With station-based car sharing, the cars are returned to reserved parking spaces at the same station after use.
Around 175 car sharing parking spaces have now been set up in Stuttgart at central, highly visible locations, preferably near public transport hubs. The first eleven electric car sharing parking spaces with charging points have also been in operation since 2024. The city administration is continuing to drive the expansion forward, planning additional locations and promoting car sharing projects in the district.

Anyone who wanted to test car sharing in public spaces had the opportunity to do so for two weeks in December 2024. The city of Stuttgart launched a campaign to increase the visibility of car sharing (opens in a new tab) under the motto “Stuttgart is changing”. The aim was to raise awareness of the service in 12 selected city districts and attract new users.
After all, car sharing saves costs, protects the environment and offers flexibility. Various campaigns drew attention to the advantages of car sharing: a scavenger hunt with vouchers, postcards for novice drivers, floor markings at car sharing stations and mailshots with discount vouchers to households for test drives. The city of Stuttgart cooperated with local providers of station-based car sharing for the campaign.
With the campaign, the city of Stuttgart particularly addressed the target group of young adults , who, according to studies, are open to flexible and cost-effective mobility options. For 2025, the city is planning two further campaigns on sustainable mobility as part of “Stuttgart is changing”.
