Stuttgart has been an environmental zone since March 1, 2008. This means that your car needs a green environmental badge to drive and park in Stuttgart.
Environmental zones are areas in which only vehicles that meet certain exhaust emission standards are allowed to drive. The vehicles (cars and trucks) must be marked with stickers on the inside of the windshield. The goal of these environmental zones is to reduce pollutant emissions caused by road traffic.
Note: Pay attention to the diesel traffic ban (opens in a new tab) in the city area.
Note: The environmental badges are valid in every environmental zone in Germany and not only in one city.
Note: With a red or yellow environmental badge you are not allowed to drive and park in the Stuttgart city area.
Online service
You can apply for an environmental badge online - even for vehicles that are not registered in Stuttgart. For vehicles with foreign license plates, you can request an environmental badge in advance by post or e-mail.
Note on your online application
The dispatch takes place by the post office. As a rule, the environmental badge will be with you within a week.
If you have any questions about the online application, please contact the vehicle registration office and not a citizens' office.
Prerequisites
There are four pollutant groups. They are based on the exhaust emission standards (Euro standards) of diesel vehicles. A higher pollutant group can be achieved by retrofitting with a particulate filter.
- Only vehicles with pollutant group 4 receive a green environmental badge.
- Vehicles in pollutant groups 1, 2 and 3 do not receive a green sticker.
- According to the labeling ordinance, vehicles with older U.S. catalytic converters, which were previously classified under pollutant group 1, receive a sticker according to pollutant group 4 (emission code numbers -01, -02 and -77), as do passenger cars of the Euro 1 emission level and trucks retrofitted with diesel soot filters.
IMPORTANT: The decisive factor for classification in one of the four pollutant groups is the emission code number entered in the vehicle documents.
Procedure
If you do not wish to order the environmental badge online, you can apply for it in person at any citizens' office and at the vehicle registration office. At the vehicle registration office also by e-mail at kfz-zulassungsstellestuttgartde
Foreign vehicle owners
Foreign vehicle owners can apply for the environmental badge in advance by e-mail: send an e-mail to feinstaubstuttgartde attach a copy of your vehicle registration certificate and do not forget to include your address. You will receive the environmental badge by post. On the letter you will find the bank transfer details for paying the fee.
Vehicles with foreign license plates can also contact the nearest registration office after crossing the border if there is not enough time to request the emissions sticker in advance by post or e-mail before visiting Stuttgart.
Note: The type of drive (petrol or diesel) cannot be seen on the Swiss vehicle registration documents, please indicate the type of drive in the application by e-mail.
Required documents
If applying in person, you must bring your vehicle registration document (a copy is sufficient).
Deadlines
The validity of the sticker is not limited. However, you will need a new sticker if you re-register your vehicle and the license plate number changes, as the current license plate number is entered on the sticker.
A new toll sticker is also required if the windshield has been replaced.
Processing time
If you apply for the environmental badge online, it will be sent by mail and will usually be with you within a week.
If you apply for the environmental badge in person, it will be issued directly to you.

Current waiting times (opens in a new tab) and early termination of the issue of waiting stamps:
At the moment, waiting times of up to 2 hours must be expected at the citizens' offices. In the event of very high visitor numbers and the associated longer waiting and processing times, the issue of waiting tokens must regularly be stopped before the end of office hours.
Passport and registration matters are currently being processed as a priority. If you visit the Citizens' Office in connection with registering or re-registering your place of residence or applying for an ID card or passport, you can also deal with your registration matters there. For registration matters on your own, please contact the registration office.
Some of our services can also be completed online, without a personal appointment. Please refer directly to the respective services for more information.
