History
On March 8, 1229, Wangen appears for the first time - together with Stuttgart - in a document issued by Pope Gregory IV for the Bebenhausen monastery. However, the town was already inhabited at the time of the Celts and Alemanni. Wangen probably became part of the House of Württemberg around 1130.
However, the settlement of industry in Wangen was a long time coming, even after the incorporation into Stuttgart on 1 April 1905. It was only when the Neckar was canalized for shipping and the danger of flooding was averted that the first important industrial companies, such as Kodak, were established.
From 1950 onwards, the entire flat market area in the Neckar valley developed rapidly: through industry, commerce, the wholesale market, the Neckar harbor and the federal road 10.
Today
The former industrial suburb has changed a lot in the meantime. There are almost no manufacturing companies left, but numerous companies from the retail, service and high-tech sectors, such as the Sony Germany research center, have settled here. The stores on Ulmer Straße, the shopping street, cover the daily needs of the people of Wangen.
If you take a stroll through Wangen, you can still discover a number of old half-timbered houses and art nouveau buildings here and there. Away from the thoroughfare, you will find beautiful gardens and leafy courtyards that enhance the quality of life and improve the air quality.
Wangen reflects the great diversity of nations and cultures in Stuttgart like hardly any other district. The good coexistence of generations and cultures is supported by many associations and initiatives in the district.
